Sympan Residencies
Stay Journey
An ode to the soul of Piraeus, the rooms of Sympan are not simply an addition to its hospitality scene — they are a quiet awakening of its past. Conceived and brought to life by the team at Lab Piree Super Studio, the space honours the building’s original architecture, allowing time to speak through every crack and contour. The façade, weathered yet dignified, bears the patina of memory — a skin that remembers.
Once a home to dockworkers in the early 20th century and later a vessel of industrial energy, the building is a palimpsest of lives lived and labors endured. Careful hands chose preservation over renovation — revealing rather than erasing. An ornate wooden staircase from a century ago invites you upward, not only through the structure, but through time itself. Beneath layers of dust, forgotten floors emerged — authentic mosaics, aged wood, stones that hold whispers. The walls, unrefined and sincere, echo with maritime silence.
The furnishings with raw textures meeting reimagined silhouettes. Each piece is a quiet intervention — not to dominate, but to converse with the space. Nothing is accidental, everything has a past and a purpose. Together they compose a scene steeped in restraint, mystery, and the dense breath of the port.
Adorning the walls are murals by visual artist Anna Dimitriou — dreamlike tableaux drawn from the rhythms and rituals of port life. Her brush listens to the sea and the city alike, capturing in pigment what words cannot hold.

The natural stone walls that were carefully revealed and the burnt wooden floor with its marks intact, place us in a time lost in the depths of history, where the workers and residents of these rooms would accompany prostitutes to their beds. The remnants of plasters on the ceilings, like bodies scraped by the patina of time, turn the space into a theatrical setting in full swing along with the industrial partitions that discreetly divide the sleeping and sanitary space. The rectangular kitchens made of black matte melamine nostalgically take you back to the ’70s and ’80s. The handles are made of concrete in a wave breaker shape. The bed has simple lines, made of iron, which in turn refers to the decor of industrial buildings with a subtle hint of the sky. A reference to the beds that the urban refugees from Asia Minor had. A pick-up furniture piece at the edge invites you to put something on to listen to, while drinking vermouth and gazing at the stars in the Danish armchair with its ’60s side table. Nightstands of different shapes and eras, processed or not. Chamber 1 looks out to the road of harbor, cultivating a cinematic atmosphere.

The natural stone walls that were attentively re-exposed and the burnt wooden floor with its unchanged marks, temporally place us in an era lost in the depths of history, where the workers and residents of these rooms accompanied prostitutes to their beds. The remnants of plasters on the ceilings, resembling bodies scraped by the patina of time, transform the space into a vivid theatrical scene, complemented by industrial partitions that discreetly separate the sleeping and sanitary areas. The rectangular kitchens made of black matte melamine nostalgically transport you back to the ’70s and ’80s. The handles are made of concrete in a wave breaker shape. The bed, with its simple lines made of iron, also refers to the decor of industrial buildings with a subtle hint of the sky, a nod to the beds of urban refugees from Asia Minor. A Danish armchair with its ’60s side table invites you to sit and enjoy a glass of vermouth. Nightstands of various shapes and eras, whether processed or not, complement the room. Kamara 2 is bathed in the light of the inner courtyard with its lush garden.

In Kamara 3, the mosaic that prevailed in the building dominates, which was polished after being found almost intact. Two internal boxes, defining the sanitary spaces, are clad with ceramic material with the appearance of aged sheet metal, and their ceilings are closed with industrial partitions and glass, creating the sense of a roof, like the roofs of the inner courtyards of the machine shops that protected machines and equipment. At times they resemble a ship’s cabin along with all its accessories, referring to ship’s sheets gathered from the sinful road of the sheet metal shops, where the cobblestone girls made their stand. In chamber 3, the stonework on the walls unobtrusively scrapes time, as light leaps through windows with skylights. The elevated bed with stairs creates a representation of being along with a microcosm of sensuality, constructed from woods that already existed in the space. The characteristic black handles draw the eye and refer us to the religious but also sinful image of Saint Dionysius, next to the road where the cobblestone girls made their stand. Chamber 3 looks out to the road of harbor, cultivating the same cinematic atmosphere.
